Persuasive writing ~ Why animals should be kept in zoos

This term for writing Totara 1 is working on persuasive writing. For this piece of writing we could either do animals should/not be kept in zoos or animals should/not be kept in circuses.

Why animals SHOULD be kept in zoos.

I strongly believe animals should be kept in zoos. Zoos are a great educational source, protect animals from getting endangered or extinct and give animals an enclosure close to their natural habitat.

Zoos are a great educational source teaching humans of every age. They often have a zookeeper explaining each of the animals. They also sometimes have billboards that have facts about the animals on them. As well as telling people facts zoos also inform humans about the dangers for these animals in the wild.

Zoos help the animals from getting endangered or extinct. Zoos help this by protecting them from hunters and poachers. They also have breeding programs designed for the animal. As well as this they make sure the animals live in a friendly environment with health checks. They have enclosures which are like their natural habitat.

Animals in zoos have a replica of their natural habitat. Most zoos are spectacular. And I mean this in the way that they have huge enclosures with lots of room for their animals. Zoos also help the animals where their natural habitats and foods have disappeared. An example of this is where zoos helped the koalas in the Australia bush fires.

Zoos are amazing for both animals and humans. Teaching humans about animals, helping the animals stay alive and giving them a close to natural habitat.

Alphabet objects

This was one of the choice activities. For this activity you had to find something around the house that starts with every letter of the alphabet. I have got everything on this list except for the xylophone.

Acrostic #2

This is my second acrostic poem. This poem had to be based on something around you or something you do. I play netball.

Acrostic poem #1

 My first acrostic poem

The journey from beans to bar

For this activity we needed to do a diagram showing the journey from the cocoa beans to the chocolate bar.

Word Map

This is the second chocolate activity. For this activity we had to chose one of the words given (I chose consumer), We then had to add our definition and how it relates to chocolate. The other thing we had to do was add an image of your words. I chose someone consuming Doritos.

Chocolate on the map

This week T1's reading task was all about chocolate. Here was our first activity.

The chart below shows the two main groups of countries involved in making and using chocolate.

  1. The consumers: The people who buy and eat the chocolate

  2. The producers: The countries that grow the cocoa plants that chocolate is made from

Top chocolate consuming countries

Top cocoa producing countries

Switzerland

Ivory Coast

Germany

Ghana

Belgium

Indonesia

Austria

Nigeria

Ireland

Brazil

United Kingdom

Cameroon

USA

Malaysia

Part 1: Google My Map

  1. Create a new Google My Map. Use this introduction to help you.

  2. Give your my map the title: Chocolate on the Map.

  3. Write a brief description of what your map shows e.g This map shows the location of the top producers of cocoa and the top consumers of chocolate in the world.

  4. On your google my map pin each of the above countries.

  5. Use blue markers for consumers and red markers for producers.

  6. Add a picture and a fact about each of the countries to your pin.

Link your map here

Part 2: Reflection

Now that you have marked all of your countries, take a look at your map and answer the following question.

  1. What does this map show us about where cocoa is produced and where the product chocolate is eaten? The poorer countries grow the cocoa and the richer countries consume it. All the countries that grow cocoa are close to the equator

  1. Why do you think this is? Give as many reasons as you can.

Area - Cocoa can only grow within 20 degrees north and south of the equator.

Money - People who grow cocoa only profit between $0.50 and $0.84 a day. Richer people will want the normal wage of about $20 an hour. This is why the poorer countries grow cocoa.

  1. Which countries do you think benefit the most from the production of chocolate?

I think the countries that profit the most are the ones who use the cocoa to make chocolate or the ones who eat the chocolate. Both Switzerland and Ghana would profit.

  1. Why do you think this is? Give as many reasons as you can.

As stated above I said the ones who consume the chocolate and the ones that make it.

Personal Experience Writing

Personal experience - W.A.L.T: use descriptive language when writing at least a 6 sentence retale of your experience.

Friday hockey game

The bitter cold wind whistling around. You are huddeling trying to keep warm. Running and stretching, slowly getting warm. Playing the game, you run like a cheetah trying to get the ball. Smiling at the sheer joy of it. Cheering when your team scores a goal. Hitting the ball like it is your very annoying brother. Tackling the other team making sure the ball does not hit your foot. Huffing as you run back and forth. Hearing the whistle blow for half time you jog back to your coach. Hungrily eating the oranges.

Descriptive Writing

 WALT: write a descriptive piece.

The frosty cold wind blasts the snow into my face. The wind yells at me as I trudge slowly towards the house leaving clear footprints in the snow. The icy steps make me slip and skid, ending in a painful fall. Cold and wet I see the pretty snowflakes falling onto my face, the grey sky frowning at me and I hear the happy laughs coming from in the house. Arriving in the house the warmth hits me like a bullet. I smell the delicious cakes baking on the fire.

Perimeter work book

Our maths work book this week was based on perimeter.

Descriptive writing

This week one of our tasks was to create a piece of descriptive writing about an image and pretend we are there.

The sun beams down upon me. Surrounded by a cloudless sky. Only a few seagulls accompany the sun. I play in the icy waves. Laughing like a hyena. I swim carelessly towards the shore. Enjoying the light breeze on my face. The palm trees wave as I return to shore. The sand is hot beneath my feet. I run swiftly to get in the shade. I taste the salty sea water as the wind carries it into my face. Watching as the sun slowly slips down down towards the sea. The sudden coldness hits me. Walking across the soft sand I pull my blanket tighter over me. The night sky stares at me with the twinkling stars winking at me.

Letter home

This term we have been doing ANZAC activities one of the activities was to write a letter home here is mine.

Send to: Greymouth 7805

Dear Mum

I have just arrived in gallipoli. The air is completely black, I am assuming that is from all the smoke. It also helps hide the bombers which frightens me. I am getting to work tomorrow hoping I can save some lives. Hopefully this war ends soon because I don’t think anyone is enjoying it here. The yells of pain and shouts for help are getting to me. Even though I haven't been here long. In the background you can hear gun fires and screams. It is hard to imagine tomorrow I will be heading into the heart of that. I am happy that I will be able to help the brave soldiers who are battling for our countries.

Looking forward to returning home and seeing you again.

Love

Molly

Blue whales - report writing

  Blue whales - information report

We are lucky to live with the largest mammal to ever have lived, the blue whale. Though they once nearly became extinct. For an animal this big what would they eat?

The blue whale is known for its size. It is the largest animal on the planet. Have you seen an elephant? A blue whale weighs up to approximately 33 elephants. That is 181436.948 kg WOW! Think of the size of an adult man, now times that by 1000 and there you have a blue whale. Blue whales are huge creatures. How could they become endangered?

Blue whales are endangered.  They have a population of 25,000 but it is thankfully not currently decreasing. Blue whales became endangered by humans from our past and current acts. Whaling started around the 11th century. It peaked in between 1846-1852. The U.S stopped whaling in 1970. At that point blue whales were nearly extinct. Nowadays the problem for blue whales and other whales is fishing nets and plastic in the ocean. About 300,000 whales, dolphins and porpoises die each year because of fishing gear. Over the past 10 years 57 whales have died from plastic. This gets into their body when they are eating.

What do you think blue whales eat? How would they eat? Blue whales eat krill. The biggest blue whales can eat up to 6 tons of krill in 1 day. Lots of sea water gets in their mouths when they are eating. They have this sort of sive in their mouth to get rid of the water. It is funny how the biggest creature on earth would eat such a small creature.

The blue whale is huge, the biggest creature on the planet, It is endangered with only 25,000 left in the world and a krill eating mammal.

Limerick - The was once this teacher

The other day I wrote a limerick. When you write a limerick the first, second and last line have to rhyme and the 3rd and 4th line have to rhyme. Here is a limerick I wrote.

There was once this teacher

who had a furry little creature

It ate a little student

It was very imprudent

Now it’s a child eater

That was winter

I have written a that was winter poem. Everyone else did a that was summer poem but because I have done on of them in the past I did not do one.

That was Winter

Remember

Sitting by the fire

Piled under lots of blankets

You creep closer towards the flame

trying to touch it.

You get up to do something.

Making cookies to lighten up the day.

Then letting them melt in your mouth

laughing with your family.

Remember

Playing board games

Hour after hour to past time.

Waiting for the sun

To break the darkness

Waiting for ever and ever

Soon asleep.

That was winter
