Compressive strength

Today for the experiment I had already done all the prep if you want to see what the the prep was click here. The circular ones ended up also holding my scissors, all the pencils and rubbers. It still hadn't collapsed but I didn't know what else to put on it so I stopped.  I was surprised when the flat ones couldn't even hold the roof, when nano girl did it it managed to hold the roof. I enjoyed this activity.

  1. Mōrena Molly,

Fiona here from the SLJ. I just watched your awesome video and WOW! I am so impressed by the way you organised your materials, then systematically tested the strength of each of your structures while on video.
I really enjoyed watching you load up each of the rubbers, then pencils, then the sticky tape dispenser… followed by a crash with the coffee cup! That was really cool.

Were you surprised that your triangle super column could hold so much? I was! I’m glad the coffee cup didn’t break! Do you think the flat paper would hold more if it was a thicker card?

Well done on another fantastic blog post.

    Keep up the great work.

    Fiona (SLJ).

  2. Hi Molly,

My name is Zana and I am a blog commenter from the Summer Learning Journey.

How exciting that we are on our third Nano Girl activity and they're getting more exciting and hands-on every week.

I thought your video was awesome, I like that you explained the activity and you talked through what you were doing and the process you went through. It is cool to see that you tried multi designs for your column and added multiple weights to see which one was the strongest. I could predict that the round ones would be stronger as they create a stronger structure but the flat paper may have worked better if it was cardboard rather than paper.

Happy Holidays, Keep up the great work and I hope to see more of your posts over the summer.

    Ngā mihi nui,
    Zana Yates
