Yesterday was Monday so the first activity is a nano girl one. So for the activity we made catapults.

  1. Hello again Molly, Elle here from SLJ.

Thank you for sharing your Nanogirl catapult - you did an awesome job! I thought it was really cool of you to assemble your catapult on camera, so we could not only see how it works, but how to build it too! Your instructions were very concise and clear and you have a fantastic presence in front of the camera.

It looks like it works very efficiently! Did you manage to get your tinfoil ball into the cup off-camera? I can imagine it might take a few tries to get the positioning right. It looks like a lot of fun! I think if my brothers had a go at this one, they would probably use food as a projectile instead and catch it in their mouths!

Well done Molly, thank you again for sharing your awesome catapult with us! What have been your favourite Summer Learning Journey activities so far? You have done so many of them!

    Ngā mihi,
    Elle (SLJ)

Yes I did but it was that one time you don't expect it too. That is a good idea I would do that with marshmallows.

I am not sure what my favourite activity would be but the origami was fun and the optical illusions were cool. What was your faourite activity?

    2. Mōrena Molly,

That is great to hear - well done! Yummy, marshmallows would be lots of fun to use on the catapult! I am going camping this weekend and we are taking marshmallows, so maybe I'll make this catapult to liven it up!

The origami and optical illusions were awesome activities, I agree! I think my other favourites would be the Treasure Code, Insect Art and Summer Song (on Google Music Lab) activities, because it was so fun to see people get creative, and I gave the activities a go myself!

Which activity did you find the most difficult?

      Mā te wā

Are you going to roast some of the marshmallows over a fire? I hope you have lots of fun camping. Are you coming back on Monday?

The treasure code was another fun one I forgot about that activity. What insect did you make for the insect art?

I am not sure what was the most difficult but the pixel art was a challenge.

What activity do you think the participants struggled with the most?

      Ma te wa

    4. Hello Molly,

We definitely are! Roasted marshmallows are my favourite. Thank you very much! We're leaving on Friday evening and coming back on Sunday evening because my parents have work! Not a very long camping trip unfortunately, but my cousins are coming too, so that will be great fun!

I made a bumblebee! I wanted to make a grasshopper, but I found it too hard to get the back legs to stand up!

The pixel art is definitely a challenge isn't it? I find it difficult when trying to make things like a circle, because you have to be very careful about where you place each pixel to get an even shape.

I think one of the most difficult activities that I noticed was the camping site, because it had a lot of maths that required careful calculations with money!

What do you think is the most important or helpful skill you have learned in doing the Summer Learning Journey activities? I've really been enjoying watching everybody develop their knowledge of technology, and it's helped me learn too!

      Ngā mihi,
      Elle (SLJ)

    5. Hello Elle

Did you use yellow flowers for the yellow part of the bumblebee or what did you use?

Yes the pixel art is a challenge.

I am not sure which one has been the most helpful though my technology skills have improved. What activity d you think has been the most helpful?

    6. Hello Molly,

Yes, I did! My mum has yellow roses in her garden, so I used that to make the body, and then threaded bark in between the layers of petals to make the black stripes! It was pretty hard to balance all of them, so it took a few goes. I wanted to use something orange for the pollen sacs, but I couldn't find anything that would work! Your butterfly was a great inspiration! I really wish I had taken a photo of it, it completely slipped my mind!

That's so great to hear, I am thoroughly impressed by all of your blog posts this summer.

I think the activities that were most helpful for developing technological skills were ones that included multimedia, like the audio in the Witchy Airwaves Podcast, and embedding the map in the Do Something New, New Zealand activity.

I also think the languages activities were important too, especially the ones in te reo Māori! What do you think?

      Ngā mihi,

    7. Hello Elle

Yes the language ones helped people with there te reo Maori and then there was that one where you said happy new year in 10 different languages.

    8. Mōrena Molly,

You are absolutely right! That activity was a cool one, wasn't it? I got to learn lots of ways of saying Happy New Years in other languages by looking at everyone's blog posts! What a great way to start the new year!

Thank you for all of your replies Molly! It's been so great to hear all of your thoughts on the activities.

I hope you have a good rest of your summer, and keep up the awesome work!
